Swansea City are set to fend off competition from Championship rivals to land Cameron Carter-Vickers, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday were also interested in the Tottenham Hotspur defender but he is edging closer to a switch to Swansea.

Carter-Vickers is unlikely to get much first-team action at Spurs this season as he sits behind the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth in the centre-back pecking order.

However, the 20-year-old is still highly rated and will be allowed to leave on loan to further his development.

The USA international has played four first-team matches for Tottenham and he racked up over 30 Championship appearances last season across two loan spells.

Carter-Vickers started the season at Sheffield United and moved to Ipswich in January.

The 6ft 1in defender was then targeted by Sheffield United's Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday this summer and Ipswich also wanted him back but a move to Swansea looks likely.

The Verdict

Swansea definitely needed another centre-half after losing Kyle Bartley and Federico Fernandez in the summer.

Carter-Vickers is a short-term fix and he is a promising young player who is going to get better.

With a year of Championship football already under his belt, you can expect him to return to the second tier a more accomplished and confident defender.
