Alfie Mawson is expected to complete his medical at Fulham at some point today, as the Swansea City centre-back edges closer to making a Premier League return.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (31/07, 11:14), Mawson is in London and undergoing a medical, which looks set to be completed over the course of today.

Fulham have fought off interest from West Ham and Burnley to secure Mawson’s service, with the English centre-back expected to cost the Cottagers £25m.

Mawson, 24, has excelled at Swansea since arriving there from Barnsley, making 65 Premier League appearances and a further six in the domestic cup competitions.

Last season, Mawson was ever-present in the Premier League, featuring in all 38 of Swansea’s fixtures.

Despite scoring two goals and impressing on the whole, Mawson couldn’t prevent from the Swans from slipping out of the top-flight and back into the Championship.

However, the defender, who received an England call-up back in March, looks set to make an instant return to the Premier League with Fulham, who won promotion from the Sky Bet Championship last season.

The Verdict

Mawson is a really classy centre-back, who did excel despite Swansea’s struggles in the Premier League last season.

He appears to be on the verge of the England squad, and the 24-year-old’s chance of a recall will be boosted by regular Premier League football.

At £25m, Swansea are getting a good price for the defender and on paper, it looks like a good move for all parties involved.
