Swansea City are pessimistic about completing a deal to sign Chiedozie Ogbene this month.

According to Wales Online, there is little sign of any breakthrough coming soon which has led many to think a deal won’t happen this window.

However, reports suggesting that Middlesbrough are interested in making a move are wide of the mark.

Boro have shown no concrete interest in the Rotherham forward, and neither have Club Brugge who were also credited with an interest in the Irishman.

Ogbene has six months remaining on his current contract, but Rotherham United may not look to cash-in on the player due to the club being embroiled in a relegation battle near the bottom of the Championship table.

The 25-year old has adapted well to the step up to the second division, and has become a key player for the Millers.

Ogbene has contributed six goals and two assists for the side currently 19th in the table.

Swansea and Millwall have previously had bids rejected for the player earlier this month, and no breakthroughs are expected imminently with under two weeks now remaining in the window.

The Verdict

Ogbene has been such a crucial figure for Rotherham this season that keeping him beyond January may prove worthwhile.

It would be worth losing a key player as a free agent if it meant he played a role in keeping the team in the second tier.

It is certainly a big risk, as the team could still get relegated anyway, but it would have a big reward if it works out.

That he will likely be a free agent in the summer is some consolation for Swansea, who have been engaged in negotiations of their own over potentially selling players this month.
