Fleetwood Town have completed the signing of Swansea City midfielder Barrie McKay until the end of the season, the League One side have confirmed.

An academy graduate from Scottish giants Rangers, McKay went onto make 130 appearances in all competitions for the Ibrox club, before joining Nottingham Forest in 2017.

McKay then joined Nottingham Forest in 2017, before joining Swansea 12 months later, and has since gone onto make 39 appearances in all competitions for the Wales-based club, scoring three goals.

The midfielder is now set to spend the remainder of the season on loan at Fleetwood, as the Cod Army look to secure promotion to the Championship this season.

Speaking to the club's official website following confirmation of the deal, Fleetwood manager Joey Barton said: “Barrie is a creative attacker who will provide a real spark in our squad.

“He’s a tricky player who has the ability to go past players, create chances and score goals, so he’s absolutely what we’ve been after.

“We look forward to him joining up with the squad and making an impact on the pitch.”

Fleetwood are currently 11th in the League One standings, six points adrift of the play-off places.

McKay becomes Fleetwood's fifth signing of the January transfer window, with the club making Lewie Coyle's loan move from Leeds permanent, while also signing midfield veteran Glenn Whelan on a short-term contract, and completing loan deals for Everton duo Callum Connolly and Lewis Gibson.

The Verdict

This looks to be a really good signing for Fleetwood.

When you look at some of the clubs already on his CV, it certainly seems as though McKay should be more than capable of making an impact at League One level.

If he is able to do that, then that could be a big boost for Fleetwood as they look to back up that promise they showed in the battle for promotion earlier in the season.

Indeed, having struggled for game time this season, you feel McKay will be desperate to make such an impact in order to prove a point to those watching on back in Wales.
