Swansea City forward issues message ahead of Wigan test

Swansea City forward Andre Ayew has urged his team to build on their derby win last weekend, as they travel to Wigan Athletic in the Championship this Saturday.

Steve Cooper’s Swansea will look to break into the automatic promotion places on Saturday, when they to head to 18th-placed Wigan this weekend.

They head up North on the back of a fine 1-0 win against their Welsh counterparts Cardiff City, a Ben Wilmot header proving the difference in what was a feisty contest in South Wales last time out.

Speaking ahead of this weekend, Swansea’s Andre Ayew said:

“Saturday’s match against Wigan is a very important game for us, we need to try and get back-to-back victories.”

The Swans haven’t recorded consecutive wins in any competition since August, after their flying start to life under Cooper dwindled – they’ve won two of their last eight games in the Championship.

“Wigan are a good team at home” added Ayew. “We need to prepare very well and get ready to come back and face them after winning last weekend.

“I know the gaffer and the staff are putting things together to ensure we are as ready as we can possibly be.

“It’s no good just winning one game, we have to string results together.”

Swansea go into the game against Wigan in 4th, and have their earlier form to thank for their league position.

Will Swansea City be promoted from the Championship this season?

No

Cooper’s side won seven of their opening eight in all competitions, and established themselves as early contenders for the title under their new boss.

But their form soon dropped and in dramatic fashion – this month they’ve lost at home to both Stoke City and Brentford, but set the record straight against Neil Warnock’s side.

The verdict

Wigan are a tough nut to crack at their DW Stadium, and Paul Cook’s side will be another stern test for the Swans.

The likes of Ayew and co will need to be in top-form to help their side take the three points on Saturday, and continue their ascent back up the Championship table.
