Swansea City are weighing up moves for Dena Smith and Lee Johnson, as they look to source Carlos Carvalhal’s replacement at the Liberty Stadium.

Following relegation from the Premier League, Carvalhal has left his role with Swansea, who are preparing for their return to the Sky Bet Championship.

According to the Guardian, Brentford’s Smith is on their radar, as well as Johnson, who has enjoyed an impressive 12 months at Ashton Gate with Bristol City.

Smith led Brentford to ninth in the Championship, with the Bees once again punching well above their weight in the division.

Like Brentford, Bristol City also enjoyed a fine campaign, with Johnson’s reputation continuing to grow.

The Robins finished 11th, with a poor run of form in 2018 seeing their play-off hopes disappear.

Added to that, Johnson also led his side to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, in what was a memorable run for the Robins.

Despite the Championship duo emerging as possible targets for Swansea, the same Guardian report has confirmed that Frank de Boer and Graham Potter are the leading contenders to replace Carvalhal in Wales, as the Swans embark on their Championship return.

The Verdict

Both Smith and Johnson have enjoyed superb 2017/18 campaigns, with Brentford and Bristol City impressing in the Championship.

Swansea’s interest is hardly a surprise, and perhaps more consideration should be given to one of the duo over De Boer and Potter.

The Championship is tough division and experience could be crucial for the Swans next season.

Smith or Johnson would be less of a risk.
