Swansea City have announced that Alan Tate has joined Steve Cooper's staff on a permanent basis.

The former player, who made almost 350 appearances in 13 years with the club, has spent the past six weeks as part of the backroom team under the new boss.

And, the Welsh side confirmed today that the 37-year-old will be sticking around, continuing his role with the younger players, whilst he will also 'act as a link between the academy and first team'.

Chairman Trevor Birch outlined to the official site what Tate will bring, whilst he stressed he has this position on merit after impressing Cooper.

"His love and passion for the club is well known and, like Leon Britton, it is important to have people here who have been part of Swansea City’s journey and understand what we are all about.

"But Alan has proved in his time working under Steve that he is very capable and can play an important part of the coaching staff. He will also act as a link between the academy and the first team. This is very important to us because a player’s progression from the under-23s to the first team is a key area."

Several Swansea youngsters have made the step up to the first-team since they were relegated to the Championship.

The verdict

This is great news for Swansea fans as they have appointed someone who really loves the club and understands exactly what it means to play for them.

Of course, the most important thing is that he is qualified to do the role, and he has shown that under Cooper in the past six weeks.

So, this is a move that seems to suit all and Tate will be surely be delighted that he will be able to continue his spell with the club.
