Swansea City have confirmed that Steve Cooper is their new Head Coach after Graham Potter left for Brighton last month.

The 39-year-old will be taking his first steps into management at this level having previously worked in youth football, where his outstanding achievement is undoubtedly guiding England's U17 side to World Cup glory two years ago.

Prior to that, Cooper worked at Liverpool for their academy and is credited with bringing through a host of talented players, with Raheem Sterling the most high-profile.

Nevertheless, this will be a different challenge for the new boss but chairman Trevor Birch told the official site that he is the perfect fit for the Swans.

"At the forefront of our thinking was the appointment of a head coach who was hungry, ambitious, had a clear track record of playing our style of football, plus a pedigree to work with and develop young, talented players.

"It may be his first senior role, but he has been coaching for over 20 years and, let’s not forget, our young squad saw more game time for under-23 players than any other team in the Championship last season."

Cooper will be assisted by former Liverpool first-team coach Mike Marsh at the Liberty Stadium.

The Verdict

This is a very brave move by Swansea as if it doesn't work out they will be in for a lot of criticism for taking such a risk.

However, Potter was deemed a risk 12 months ago and that went well, whilst you can also understand the thinking behind this move.

Cooper has excelled in youth football and plays an attractive style, and he will be tasked with developing players from the academy to play a certain way now.
