Sky Bet Championship side Swansea City are closing in on the managerial appointment of England under-17 coach Steve Cooper, according to reports from Wales Online.

The Welsh club are still on the lookout for a new manager, after previous boss Graham Potter recently left the Liberty Stadium to become the new boss of Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

Plenty of names have been linked with the vacant post at the Liberty Stadium, with former Wales manager Chris Coleman and former Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis among the more experienced names linked with the role.

But what looks to be the most likely of appointments is anything but experienced, as it is claimed that Swansea are closing in on appointing Cooper as their new manager.

Swansea chairman Trevor Birch has interviewed Cooper regarding the vacant role, and is believed to have been hugely impressed by a presentation the 39-year-old gave as part of that interview.

The 39-year-old is yet to manage at senior level, having been the academy manager of Liverpool between 2008 and 2011, before moving to the England setup in 2014.

The Welshman earned his stripes after guiding the England under-17 side to FIFA World Cup success in 2017, and will now look to make his mark in the senior game should he become the new manager of Swansea.

The Verdict

This is a managerial appointment that is likely to raise eyebrows all across the country, let alone in Swansea.

It is a massive risk by Swansea if the club do appoint Cooper, especially as he hasn't had a taste of senior football for many years.

He has clearly worked wonders with some very talented youngsters over the years, but has he got enough about him to make the step-up, and be successful in the Championship?
