Swansea City are due compensation if Steve Cooper becomes the new Nottingham Forest head coach.

Chris Hughton has left his post with Forest this morning after six defeats from the opening seven fixtures of the Championship season.

It's claimed by John Percy at The Telegraph that the club are ready to open talks with Cooper, with the view of appointing him ahead of the weekend when Forest travel to West Yorkshire to take on Huddersfield Town.

However, as per Alan Nixon, should Forest move to appoint Cooper, Swansea are going to be set for compensation.

The 41-year-old left the Swans back in the summer when he was just two years into a three year contract with the Championship club.

Cooper led Swansea to back-to-back play-off finishes during his two years at the helm, but was unable to deliver a Premier League return.

Swansea were beaten by Brentford twice in the play-offs, once at the semi-final stage and then at Wembley earlier in 2021.

Despite that success, Cooper departed the club in the summer after failing to reach an agreement to extend his contract with the Swans.

He departed with 12 months still remaining on his job and has been out of work at this early stage of the 2021/22 season.

The Verdict

This suggests that Cooper has been on gardening leave after leaving Swansea, so until his contract there was due to expire, the club are covered if a rival comes in for him.

In this instance, they will receive a fee should he end up at Forest.

That's obviously good news for the club and a nod to the decision they made upon Cooper's exit from the club. For Forest, though, whatever the compensation fee is, it needs to be paid.

They are bottom of the Championship and need to get moving in the right direction. Cooper will help them do that.
