Swansea Chairman Trevor Birch has updated the fans with regard to the process of finding a new manager.

Gus Poyet is the latest name linked with the role, Michael Appleton remains in the running but Tranmere manager Micky Mellon has been ruled out.

In a statement released on the club website, Birch highlighted potential candidates were interviewed by a panel which included former player Leon Britton - with a shortlist to be drawn up as a result.

Another former player, an honorary president at the club Alan Curtis will then be involved in speaking to candidates shortlist.

The statement also suggests that the club will take its time with the appointment, with more candidates to be interviewed this week.

Graham Potter spent a year at the Swans before leaving for Brighton on the 20th of May.

The Verdict

This is an important decision for Swansea, so whilst it is good that they are taking their time and going through due diligence, it is an appointment that needs to be wrapped up within the next couple of weeks if they are to be ready in time for pre-season.

The sooner a manager comes in, the sooner plans for next season can be made with regard to potential targets and new signings - as well as departures. Swansea made big budget cuts last season but they will need some incomings in order to succeed next season, and they can't do that properly without a manager to identify who he'd like to bring in.
