Steve Cooper has backed Swansea City defender Joe Rodon to earn his first Wales cap in the near future.

Having played every minute for the Swans so far this season, Rodon is looking to be picked by Ryan Giggs for Wales' upcoming Euro 2020 qualifier against Azerbaijan and a friendly against Belarus.

Giggs is due to pick his squad on Wednesday morning and Cooper believes that the 21-year-old is deserving of a place in the former Manchester United legend's squad.

Speaking to Wales Online, Cooper said: "He has been in the squad before, he was in the last one, although he didn’t play any minutes.

"I think Joe is a big player for us. He’s had a very good start to the season and the exciting thing with Joe is he’ll only get better. I really believe in his potential.

"He's a right-footed centre-back playing on the left. He’s taken great responsibility both with and without the ball.

"He’s only going to grow in this environment. If he starts doing as well for Wales as he is for us then I wouldn't be surprised. I’m really enjoying working with him, he loves playing for Swansea and he’s proud to play for the club, his words not mine. He's giving his all day in day out.

"It’s a real honour to work with him and the guys every day because they always want to do well and improve and support their team mates.

Swansea travel to London on Wednesday night where they face QPR at Loftus Road. Rodon will be hoping he continues his run in the side.

The Verdict

Rodon has so much potential and has been a strong player for Swansea already this season. Part of a defence that kept a great clean sheet at Derby last week, he's got all the attributes to go far in the game.

The Swans remain unbeaten this season and they will have to expect transfer speculation if he continues to perform at Championship level. Considering he's so young, the sky's the limit but he must not let other people's opinions get into his head.

In terms of playing for Wales, there is currently a defensive shortage as Ethan Ampadu and James Chester have only just recovered from knocks whilst Ashley Williams hasn't played a minute of club football this season. This could be the international break where he finally makes his first Wales start.
