Motherwell defender Declan Gallagher is attracting interest from a number of Championship and League One clubs as a potential January transfer target, a report from the Daily Record has claimed.

Gallagher only joined Motherwell from fellow Scottish Premiership side Livingston in the most recent summer transfer window, but has already made an impact at Fir Park.

The 28-year-old has so far made 25 appearances in all competitions for Motherwell, scoring twice, to help them to third-place in the current Scottish top-flight standings, while also earning his first senior Scotland call-up and cap earlier this season.

It seems as though those performances have certainly caught the attention of plenty in English football's second-tier, with Swansea, Charlton, Wigan and Bristol City all said to be contemplating a move for Gallagher.

League One promotion chasers Peterborough are also thought to be taking an interest in the centre back, as they aim for a return to the Championship this year.

There are currently 18 months remaining on Gallagher's contract at Motherwell, and it is reported that the Scottish club will demand around £500,000 for the defender, who manager Stephen Robinson is said to be keen to keep in his squad.

The Verdict

This looks as though it could be a useful signing for one of these sides.

Gallagher has clearly impressed for Motherwell since arriving at the club half a season ago, and it seems as though he would be able to bring an added stability to the backline of any side able to win the race for his signature.

You wonder however, whether any side will be able to tempt him to make the move, given the prospect of Europa League football that Motherwell are currently competing for could be an attractive opportunity for the defender.
