Nathan Ferguson will not be joining Crystal Palace from West Brom as his move to the Premier League club collapsed late on.

The 19-year-old full-back had been in talks with the Londoners yesterday after a fee was agreed with the Baggies and it seemed a matter of time before he was announced as an Eagles player.

However, it was then reported that there was an issue with his medical which held the deal up.

Nevertheless, with talks ongoing between the clubs, the transfer was expected to go through before the 11pm deadline but it has now fallen through.

That's according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein, who stated on Twitter that Palace will not be signing the teenager.

"Proposed transfer of 19-year-old England youth international defender Nathan Ferguson from West Brom to Crystal Palace is off. Palace incomings are done."

Where this leaves Ferguson at The Hawthorns remains to be seen, with the Baggies confirming the arrival of Lee Peltier tonight, which leaves boss Slaven Bilic with four recognised full-backs, with the academy graduate a fifth.

The verdict

This is a very surprising development as despite the knee issues that came up on his medical, it still seemed like the transfer would go through.

You have to have some sympathy for the player because he will have had his heart set on playing in the top-flight and it's a shame for him that it hasn't happened.

And, it leaves him in a very awkward position with the Baggies now. They may, understandably, be annoyed with how this has played out and it's possible that he will spend the next few months on the sidelines.

With his contract up in the summer it is going to be interesting to see what happens to the defender, who is undoubtedly talented.
