Anderlecht player-manager Vincent Kompany has identified Bristol City defender Ashley Williams as a potential January signing according to Football Insider.

After retiring from professional football in the summer, former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany joined Belgian First Division side Anderlecht as player-manager.

But with one just one win from their opening nine fixtures, Kompany finds his new side 13th of 16 teams in the Belgian Division.

It’s been reported that he’ll make a shock move for Ashley Williams in January, who joined Bristol on a short-term deal after being released by Stoke City in the summer.

It’s a recommendation from fellow Welshman Craig Bellamy, who is part of Kompany’s coaching staff at Anderlecht.

The 35-year-old made his debut for Lee Johnson’s side last month, and has played every minute of their last four games since.

The verdict

Signing a short-term contract, Johnson would've had some concern of Williams' fitness going into the season. But he's looked a solid signing in the games he's played.

Kompany has played against Williams at both club level and international. He’ll be well aware of what he has to offer and as Williams nears the end of his footballing days, he may well go for something new in January.
