Sunderland are looking for a new manager after sacking Simon Grayson and Ally McCoist has emerged as a serious contender for the job in the North East. The Rangers legend hasn't managed since he left the Glasgow giants in 2014.

McCoist previously enjoyed a spell as a player on Wearside, playing over 50 games for the club, and now he could be set for a return. According to the Daily Mail, the 55-year old is a close friend of Sunderland CEO Martin Bain and will be on the shortlist to replace Simon Grayson. The ex-Scotland international hasn't been involved in the game since his surprise departure from Rangers, having helped the club rise from the bottom of Scottish football.

Billy McKinlay and Robbie Stockdale have been placed in charge for Sunday's local derby against Middlesbrough in what looks a very challenging fixture. The Black Cats are two points from safety and will look to name a permanent appointment in the international break that follows the game at the Riverside.

The Verdict

Ally McCoist would represent a major risk by Sunderland should he get the job. His brief managerial experience only includes taking a Rangers side through divisions that they were clearly too good for.

However, that doesn't mean he couldn't revive the team. Clearly, they need someone to inject a bit of passion and life into the club and McCoist could do that.

Ultimately though, you would be very surprised if he landed the job given the precarious situation the Black Cats are in.
