Bristol City have made a fast start to the season after some shrewd transfer business during the summer window.

We've still yet to see the best of three of City's new signings, Chris Brunt, Steven Sessegnon and Joe Williams, but two of their summer arrivals have quickly become regular fixtures.

Alfie Mawson has worn the captain's armband in the Robins' last four games, while Chris Martin has formed a formidable strike partnership with Nahki Wells.

Martin joined City as a free agent in September after leaving Derby County earlier in the summer, with the two-year deal he signed at Ashton Gate touted as a key factor in the move – with an offer from the Rams thought to be on the table.

It's fair to say that the 31-year-old's arrival was met with a mixed reaction from the Ashton Gate faithful, with some feeling the move lacked ambition, others suggesting it showed pragmatism on the club's behalf, and some excited by his arrival.

Judging from the social media reaction, few City fans were expecting Martin to have the impact that he has in the early stages of the season.

The striker has quickly cemented his place in the Robins starting XI but it has been his quality as a creator rather than a goalscorer that has been so impressive.

Martin leads the Championship in assists with four in six games and has slotted into Holden's 3-5-2 system as if his role were made for him, with his link-up play perfectly complemented by Wells' finishing and the vigour with which the likes of Andi Weimann, Jamie Paterson, Jack Hunt, and Tommy Rowe have willingly surged forward.

The 31-year-old is yet to find the net for the Robins but if he continues to provide chance after chance for his teammates, that won't matter.

The signing of Martin may have left many unconvinced back in September but it seems as though the striker is well on his way to becoming a firm fan favourite at Ashton Gate.
