Sunderland are in a great position as they look to make an instant return to the Championship after a third consecutive win last time out.

That victory, combined with Barnsley dropping more points, means they are level on points with the Tykes but importantly have two games in hand.

Even though the Wearside outfit are a huge club in the third-tier, Ross deserves huge credit for getting Sunderland in this position.

They were a club in turmoil when he took over and there was a huge turnover of players in the summer that needed to settle immediately.

Thankfully for Black Cats fans they have though, with Luke O'Nien one of the summer recruits to make a real impact.

The 25-year-old was by no means a high-profile arrival compared to other signings when he joined from Wycombe. Yet, when he signed there was a lot of excitement and optimism about what he would bring to the team.

And, O'Nien has proven those supporters to be correct, establishing himself as a key player for Ross - in various positions.

His versatility has been key, with the player filling in at full-back and across the midfield. He is a very dependable performer and never lets the team down no matter where he features.

Additionally, he has symbolised a new era for Sunderland, with the support recognising the passion and effort he has when he pulls on the red and white shirt.

That hasn't been the case over recent years but this team have really connected with the fans and players like O'Nien have been crucial to the rebuilding of Sunderland that should result in promotion next month.
