Sunderland are eyeing up a move for big Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu before the deadline closes.

The Black Cats are in desperate need of a striker, with Chris Coleman having two teenagers as his only options in the squad since Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan departed earlier in the month.

And, according to the Sheffield Star, they have turned their attention to the giant Kosovan international who is out of contract in six months.

However, it’s unclear as to whether Jos Luhukay would sanction a move for Nuhiu with the current injury crisis that has hit the club.

The likes of Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher are all out injured, even though the Owls still have several options available to them.

But, in their absence, Nuhiu has shone under the new boss. He has scored three goals in two FA Cup starts and also came on as a sub in each of the three league games that Luhukay has taken charge for.

Whilst Nuhiu is certainly effective at what he does, Sunderland wouldn’t be signing a prolific striker as the 28-year old has managed just 20 goals from 153 Championship games although he is often used as a sub.

The Verdict

Despite that goal record there’s no doubt Nuhiu could be a very effective player and would improve the very limited options Coleman has up front.

Realistically, he doesn’t have a long-term future at Hillsborough but Luhukay may want him until the end of the season.

Although, regular football will surely appeal to Nuhiu who may want to push for the move.
