According to a transfer report in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Sunderland a weighing up a move for a new goalkeeper in the coming days, with Andy Lonergan and Dimi Konstantopoulos on Chris Coleman’s radar.

Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele are currently battling for a starting berth at the Stadium of Light, but neither have particularly impressed for Coleman’s side, who find themselves in a relegation fight in the Sky Bet Championship.

Sunderland are looking to add another goalkeeper to their squad during the final days of the January transfer window, with Lonergan and Konstantopoulos both emerging as targets.

The Black Cats have already made an approach to Leeds United for the service of Lonergan, with the club willing to offer the 34-year-old a match on his current deal at Elland Road, which still has 18 months remaining.

Lonergan is set to be involved on the bench this evening when Leeds face Hull City at the KCOM Stadium, but a move could still be on the cards tomorrow.

Sunderland have also identified Konstantopoulos as a target, and whilst they would have to pay Leeds a fee for Lonergan, they could land the Middlesbrough goalkeeper for free, with his contract coming to an end at the close of the current campaign.

The Verdict

Sunderland need to act fast if they are to get a new keeper in before the end of the transfer window, with time no longer on Coleman’s side.

Neither Ruiter nor Steele have been impressive since their respective moves to the Stadium of Light and Coleman’s stance is understandable.

Who Sunderland make a move for could be the key decision Coleman makes in the coming days.
