Ligue 1 side Rennes have offered Wabhi Khazri a contract as they attempt to sign him, according to L'Equipe.

The Tunisian spent last season on loan at Rennes and sufficiently impressed for the club to be interested in signing him permanently due to nine goals in 24 league games. He is currently preparing for the World Cup with the national team, with England and Belgium being two of the sides he will face so his value could very easily go up based on how he does.

Khazri helped Sunderland stay up back in 2016 after joining in January from Bordeaux, but his time appears to be coming to an end due to their recent slump with League One not being an exciting proposition for a talented player such as him.

The Verdict

Sunderland's relegation means they can't afford to pay Khazri's wages even if he did stay, so a move is highly likely to happen this summer. However, Stewart Donald is ensuring they get value for money by driving a hard bargaining line, which is the right move because clubs will try to take advantage due to their current situation.

It suits both Khazri and Sunderland for the move to happen after the World Cup because new suitors could be attracted with Champions League football likely to be a priority for Khazri, although Rennes did finish in a Europa League spot.
