Sunderland's move to sign midfielder Greg Docherty from Rangers is in doubt, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has reported.
Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson had revealed late last week that the League One promotion-chasers were keen on a move for the midfielder, as they look to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.
According to Downie's latest update however, it now appears as though they may now longer be in a position to secure the services of the midfielder, with a move to the Stadium of Light for the 23-year-old now seemingly uncertain, although as yet the reason for the change in situation is unclear.
Since joining Rangers from Hamilton in the 2018 January transfer window, Docherty has found opportunities hard to come by at Ibrox, making just 15 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow-based club, while also spending time out on loan in League One with Shrewsbury Town last season.
There are two-and-a-half years remaining on Docherty's contract with Rangers, securing his future at the club until the end of the 2021/22 season.
The Verdict
This could be quite frustrating for Sunderland.
Having seemingly held a strong interest in Docherty, the fact they could now miss out on his signature will be disappointing for them, particularly considering the promise he has shown during his career.
It will be interesting to see just why this may be, and you do have to wonder somewhat whether another club has come in with a better offer for the midfielder, which may now have considerable implications with regards to Sunderland's hopes of promotion back to the Championship this season.
