Sunderland have taken Burnley youngster Will Harris on trial ahead of a potential permanent move in the summer according to Lancashire Live.

Harris is out of contract with Burnley in the summer of 2020, and with no new deal on the horizon, he is seemingly keen to explore his options elsewhere.

The 19-year-old scored nine goals in 12 appearances for Colne earlier in this year's campaign, and he's clearly a player that Sunderland are eager to have a closer look at.

Harris is likely to be available for selection for Sunderland's Under-23s team, and he'll be hoping he can make a positive impression with the League One club.

The young Black Cats team are currently sat bottom of the table, and have lost 16 out of their 17 matches this season, which doesn't make for good reading.

Their only point of the season came against Stoke City's Under-23s in their first game of the season. Harris will be keen to hit the ground running at the earliest of opportunities as he looks to find a new club.

Sunderland's Under-23s side are next in action on Sunday 1st March, when they take on Fulham.

Phil Parkinson's first team return to league action on Saturday when they take on Bristol Rovers at the Stadium of Light, as they look to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive in League One.

The Verdict:

This is a smart move by Sunderland.

Harris isn't proven in senior football at the moment, so it's good to see that they're taking a look at him in a trial period, before contemplating whether to offer him a contract in the future.

Given that he's only 19, I wouldn't be surprised to see him link up with Sunderland's Under-23s if he arrived at the Stadium of Light on a permanent deal, and he'd be hoping he can turn their poor run of form around at the earliest of opportunities.

If he can hit the ground running, then we could see him being one of the next young players to make the step up to Phil Parkinson's first team in the future.
