Sunderland will not be making any attempt to re-sign former midfielder Liam Bridcutt, contrary to reports earlier today.

Bridcutt has reportedly been made available for a loan by Nottingham Forest since returning to the City Ground from a loan spell at League One Bolton Wanderers.

Earlier today, the Sunderland Echo reported that the Black Cats were lining up a swoop for Forest duo Zach Clough and Bridcutt, but it appears the club will not be in for the latter.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed the club's stance on the potential transfer, saying the Black Cats are not interested in bringing Bridcutt back to Wearside.

Writing on his official Twitter account, Downie said: "A club source is now telling us Liam Bridcutt will not be rejoining #SAFC and they currently have no interest in the player."

Sunderland are no doubt looking to strengthen their ranks in this window but it appears, contrary to earlier reports, Bridcutt is not one of their targets.

The Verdict

This could be the shortest lived transfer rumour of this window and it is interesting to see how quickly a club source clarified the Black Cats' position over this.

At 30, Bridcutt would helped bring a wealth of experience to the Sunderland squad and given his previous ties with the club the move may have been appealing for the player.

Bridcutt was largely underwhelming during his time on Wearside, and perhaps that has played a factor in the club not wanting to take the player back on board.
