Lamine Kone is a major doubt for Sunderland’s trip to Leeds United on Saturday, with Chris Coleman admitting he is unsure if the defender will make the clash at Elland Road.

A groin injury picked up in Friday night’s 4-1 victory over Derby County is troubling Kone, with the defender forced to sit out yesterday’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light.

In the absence of Kone, Coleman’s side lost 3-1, with the Black Cats struggling to back up the performance they put in earlier in the Easter period at Pride Park.

Kone is now a major doubt for Saturday’s trip to Elland Road, with Coleman unsure if he will have the 29-year-old available against Leeds.

When asked about Kone’s possible involvement at Elland Road, Coleman told the Sunderland Echo: “I've no idea. It's a groin problem he picked up on Friday night midway through the second half.

"He had a light session on Sunday, wasn't comfortable, and was even worse on Monday morning. We don't know yet."

A mixed Easter period hasn’t boosted Sunderland’s chance of survival in the Championship, with Coleman’s side still facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation to Sky Bet League One.

Sunderland sit 23rd in the table, still five points adrift of Birmingham City and safety, with just six fixtures of the Championship season remaining.

The Verdict

Kone might’ve been inconsistent this season, but his performance against Derby showed how important he is to Coleman’s side and their chance of success.

Time is running out for Sunderland as they look to fight their way to safety, and you’d probably say that three points at Elland Road is a must for Coleman’s side.

Without Kone they will be difficult to pick up, although with Leeds having very little to play for, Coleman’s side could spring a surprise.
