Sunderland striker Andrew Nelson admits the future is uncertain as he continues to slam home goals for National League North side Darlington.

The 21-year old is in superb form for the Quakers, bagging six goals in four matches since joining on a 28-day loan earlier this month. That spell is soon set to end, with his current employers keen to extend his stay beyond the initial period.

It is reported there are clubs in both the non-league scene and the Football League keen to take him until the end of the season, giving him the vital exposure to senior football he needs.

Having only returned from a serious knee injury recently, Nelson is quickly adapting to first team football, but admits he's currently not sure what the future holds for him.

“I’m waiting to hear back from Sunderland to see what they say, until then I can’t really say much,” he told the Northern Echo. “I haven’t got a plan going forward until this 28-day period is up."

“All I want to do is enjoy my football, score goals and do well. That could be anywhere, it could be in the Football League or in the Conference North, wherever as long as I’m playing football I’m happy.”

Nelson enjoyed a successful loan spell in the Scotland last season, scoring four times in 12 matches, but his route to first team football at the Stadium of Light is blocked by the likes of Josh Maja and Charlie Wyke.

The Verdict

Nelson is bound to have Football League clubs interested. He's young, but he's got phenomenal talent and promise. He might be a bit away from the Sunderland first team, but he's proving to be a cut above the sixth tier of English football.

Had he been fit in August he would likely already have been in League Two, but he only got back on the grass after the loan window expired. He's sure to leave Darlington when the deal is complete.
