Sunderland are edging closer to completing a deal to sign Bristol City forward Antoine Semenyo on loan according to The Mirror's Graeme Bailey.

The journalist revealed that the youngster has been in talks with the Black Cats for a number of weeks, and that both parties have come to an agreement to land his signature until the end of this year's campaign.

Semenyo has struggled for consistent game time with Lee Johnson's side this season, and the Robins boss is seemingly willing to allow him to leave the club before Friday's deadline.

The 20-year-old has made 11 appearances for the Bristol City first team in all competitions this term, and he'll be hoping he can further his development away from Johnson's men.

Semenyo is set to sign for a Sunderland side that are well in the hunt to challenge for promotion into the Championship this season.

After a slow start to life at the Stadium of Light, Phil Parkinson has guided his side up to fifth in the League One table, and they'll fancy their chances of a timely return to the second tier.

If Semenyo's loan deal can be completed in the near future, he could be in line to make his Sunderland debut when they take on promotion rivals Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday.

The Verdict:

This could be somewhat of a coup for the Black Cats if they can get the deal over the line.

Semenyo has already featured for Bristol City's first team this season, and I think he'll be a key player for Phil Parkinson's side as they look to challenge for promotion back into the Championship.

Sunderland could definitely benefit from having additional depth in the second-half of this year's campaign, and Semenyo will provide them with that.

He could prove to be the missing piece in their promotion jigsaw this season.
