Sunderland will not be signing Eldin Jakupovic today, but Chris Coleman remains hopeful of agreeing a deal with Leeds United for Andy Lonergan, according to Keith Downie from Sky Sports News.

Coleman is desperately looking to add a goalkeeper at the Stadium of Light today, with neither Jason Steele nor Robbin Ruiter particularly impressive so far this season.

Reports had linked Sunderland with a loan move for Jakupovic, but it is now understood that no deal will happen with Leicester City.

However, Sunderland remain hopeful of completing a deal with Leeds for Lonergan, who according to reports close to Leeds, has already travelled to the north east for a medical ahead of a permanent move.

Lonergan has featured on nine occasions across all competition for Leeds this season, but has struggled to compete with Felix Wiedwald for a regular starting berth, with the German preferred for large parts by Thomas Christiansen.

Whilst Sunderland remain hopeful of signing Lonergan, another deal is edging closer, with Downie also confirming that Ovie Ejaria currently undergoing a medical with the Black Cats.

The Verdict

Sunderland need a goalkeeper and have had to significantly step up their quest to sign one in the last 24 hours.

Jakupovic is perhaps the better option out of the duo linked, however, it appears Lonergan will be the player signed.

The 34-year-old is certainly a better option than what Sunderland currently have available, and although he has his faults, he should improve the club’s defensive performance.
