Sunderland star speaks out about potential Bayern Munich future

Sunderland shot-stopper Ron-Thorben Hoffman has been in fine form this season during his loan spell at the third tier club – and the 22-year-old has told Suddeutsche Zeitung (via Inside Futbol) that he feels he can return to his parent side and stay there.

The youngster signed for the Black Cats in summer on a loan from the Bundesliga outfit and has shown already what he is capable of. The German has managed five clean sheets already this campaign and is playing his part in helping the side push for a promotion spot.

Sunderland have the man until the end of the season but it seems likely that he could be sent out on loan again upon his return to Bayern, with the Bundesliga giants unlikely to throw him straight into the equation based on their status.

Quiz: Have Sunderland signed a player from each of these 20 clubs in the last 5 seasons?

However, the goalkeeper has today spoken to Suddeutsche Zeitung (via Inside Futbol) and claims that he feels he could return to Bayern – and that ultimately means he feels he could have a chance at starting for the club further down the line.

Speaking about the move back to his parent club, he said: “Yes, I can [return to Bayern]. FC Bayern are my favourite club, next to my home club Hansa Rostock and will always be.”

Bayern’s main shot-stopper right now is still Manuel Neuer and is likely to be until he leaves or retires. Hoffman though is putting in some solid performances at Sunderland and if he can make the leap up a level higher soon and continue to look good, then the 22-year-old German goalkeeper could have every chance of playing for his parent team in the future.

The Verdict

Ron-Thorben Hoffman’s goalkeeping ability has been superb at League One level – but the third tier is ultimately very different to the Bundesliga.

Based on the differences between the two leagues, I can’t see Bayern recalling Hoffman and immediately giving him minutes, especially with Manuel Neuer above him in the pecking order. Hoffman will have to ensure he keeps on putting in solid displays at Sunderland and that he then bags a move to a higher level next time and does similar.

Munich are a club with very high standards and they’ll need to have a world-class goalkeeper between the sticks for them. If Hoffman can play to his potential, then he could certainly play for them in the future.

As for the current season and the next one though, Hoffman may have to focus on finding game-time elsewhere for the time being – which the player himself is fully aware of.
