Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore will be involved in the Black Cats' squad for their Checkatrade Trophy clash with Notts County on Tuesday.

Watmore has been missing with a knee injury for over a year now but finally looks set to make his return to first-team football.

"Duncan (Watmore) will be part of the squad," assistant manager James Fowler revealed to the club's official media.

"He will get some game time tomorrow on his way back from his injury.

"Having seen what we have from him in previous games and in training, we are really excited to have him back."

Before his injury, the 24-year-old had already impressed, making 49 appearances across the Premier League and Championship, scoring four goals and assisting seven.

Sunderland were held in the second round of the FA Cup on Saturday, drawing 1-1 away to Walsall, just weeks after a 2-2 draw in the league.

The Black Cats currently sit second in the League One table, two points ahead of Luton Town and four points behind table-toppers Portsmouth.

The Verdict

This is brilliant news for everyone at the club and will give the Black Cats a real boost for the festive period and beyond.

Watmore showed just how could he can be when he burst onto the scene at the end of the 2015/16 season and that was in the Premier League.

So who knows what he will be capable of in League One? Jack Ross has put together an impressive attacking unit at the Stadium of Light and it will be important not to interrupt that, but what an option he is.
