Sunderland star reveals secret of his recent good form

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has revealed what lies behind the recent good form which has helped the Black Cats stay in touch with the automatic promotion spots.

The 30-year old has never plied his trade as low as League One before, but he’s taken to it well and has even chipped in with a couple of goals to help fire his side to third, four points behind leaders Portsmouth.

Cattermole reveals that after years of battling at the bottom of the table, winning matches is changing his mood and his performances.

“For me, I fought relegation from the Premier League for twelve years, going home devastated on a night because you’re losing games,” he told the Shields Gazette. “Digging in, it is a lot of effort. The difference in me because we’re winning, it doesn’t matter what league it is in. It’s a good thing to be part of.”

Cattermole has three goals from his ten League One outings and also credits manager Jack Ross and the new players for his resurgence in form.

“I just felt chatting to Jack that he really cared, understood my situation. I felt I could learn from him, how he wants to play, you see times in games, some of the football we play is great. That’s even with so many new many players. I like his principles, what he wants from his team.”

Sunderland host Carlisle tomorrow evening in the EFL Trophy, before having a week off due to their player’s international commitments.

The Verdict

Cattermole is clearly a man enjoying his football right now. The cynics may say a Premier League quality footballer should thrive in League One, but it isn’t always the case.

He’s fighting for the cause and that will only serve to endear him even more to the Sunderland faithful.
