Sunderland star Luke O'Nien has offered comments on his future with his contract at the Stadium of Light expiring in the summer.

The versatile O'Nien has shown his qualities in midfield and at full-back during his time in red and white but could be available on a free as things stand.

Certainly, it would be a bit of a surprise if he left on a free but that cannot be ruled out given the current state of play as his deal runs towards its expiry.

That said, then, it's only natural he's been asked about the future and quoted by the Sunderland Echo he had this to say:

“I think the mentality any player should have is that you're always playing for your future - no matter whether you've got six months or six years left on your contract.

"For me, it's been the same since I signed my first contract to now. You're always going to be playing for your future.”

The Verdict

It seems fair to suggest he's not overly letting things bother him at the moment but it's surely something he'll want to get sorted as time goes on this season now.

He's a player that has plenty to offer and if that is not at Sunderland there will surely be a lot of clubs looking to try and bring him in.

It's certainly a situation to watch, then, and it sounds as though he'll be raising his levels as high as possible in the weeks to come for the Black Cats.
