Sunderland will be hoping for an immediate return to the Championship following a miserable season last time out which saw the Black Cats go through two manager and suffer consecutive relegations.
New manager Jack Ross will be keen to make some summer additions and oversee a clearout of existing talent, while the the Sunderland fans will no doubt be hoping to see their team get off to a positive start in the third tier.
Without making excuses, Sunderland are simply too big a club to be wallowing down in League One, and it would be a big shock to not see them among front runners. However, to make sure they do have success, they are going to need goalscorers, and one man we at FLW think could do a job is experienced strike ace Brett Pitman.
The former Bristol City and Ipswich Town man smashed in 24 goals for Portsmouth last season to once again show he is a proven commodity at this level, and he would no doubt relish a move to a club like Sunderland if the chance arose.
Pitman is a quality finisher, and at 31, has ample experience to take with him to handle the pressure of playing in front of the expectant Mackems.
Portsmouth will not want to lose their main man, but with Sunderland now in the mix, there is a big chance of the best players in League One being tempted to move on.
Sunderland fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!
