Sunderland are undoubtedly the biggest draw in League One right now.

They're only at that level for the second time in their history and will be the one game ringed on calendars of League One sides everywhere.

Whilst they are everyone's cup final, they're only as good as the squad Jack Ross builds and they won't be buying their way to the title. Money isn't growing on the trees in Sunderland, just like it isn't anywhere else.

Nor does their status guarantee them a pick of the best players Lyle Taylor, an undoubted talent from AFC Wimbledon, chose to remain in the capital with Charlton rather than relocate to Sunderland. If they want goals, they have to look elsewhere.

One link that keeps popping up is with Jason Cummings, the Nottingham Forest striker seemingly out on his ear at the City Ground. The former Heart of Midlothian youth hasn't impressed Aitor Karanka at all and he failed to earn himself a deal with a loan switch to Rangers. As the summer presses on, he's running out of options which sound much like Jack Ross and his striker search.

The two parties are a match made in heaven, a partnership that simply screams potential. Cummings might not have impressed last season, but prior to his move down south, he enjoyed four goal-laden years at Hibs, scoring 71 times in 150 games, even helping the Easter Road side to lift the Scottish Cup in 2016.

His crown has slipped a little and with the revolution going on in Nottingham there's no surprise he's out in the cold. He is still only 22-years old though and has proven himself to be adept in front of goal. The Scottish Championship might be comparable with the English third tier, if it is then he could be the surprise package Ross needs to ensure Sunderland live up to their reputation.

His former manager, Alan Stubbs, is in no doubt whatsoever as to the player's potential, describing him in an interview as having 'the knack of being in the right place at the right time' and always showing a 'composure and calmness to score that comes from within.' High praise indeed.

Former Celtic defender Stubbs tipped Cummings to be a success in the English game if that is what he wants and there's no better place to do that right now than the Stadium of Light. League One would afford Cummings the chance to score a few goals and rebuild his reputation, giving Sunderland the boost up front they need to repair their reputation too.

It's a win win situation, both parties would benefit hugely from the others input. If there's an inkling this deal could be done, Jack Ross needs to make it his utmost priority.
