As the 2017/18 season draws nearer, Sunderland need to bring in a new goalkeeper as a matter of urgency.

The Black Cats have lost their two main goalkeepers in the summer transfer window and have been left light in that department ahead of their upcoming Championship campaign.

One of Sunderland's shining lights in a dire Premier League campaign last season was Jordan Pickford.

The young academy product has since been poached by Everton, though.

And Pickford was followed out of the exit door at the Stadium of Light by fellow goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

Reading have snapped up Mannone as their Ali Al-Habsi replacement and now Sunderland have been left with Mika as their only senior stopper.

As a result, Simon Grayson will be scouring the market for available goalkeepers.

One player that he should definitely look at is Connor Ripley.

Middlesbrough seem reluctant to give Connor Ripley a chance in the first team, even though he probably merits an opportunity.

After losing Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan, Boro could have placed their trust in the 24-year-old.

However, they are desperately trying to bring in another goalkeeper.

With Dimi Konstantopoulos still on their books, Ripley could be demoted to third choice at the Riverside and this could mean that he is moved on.

He spent last season on loan at Oldham Athletic and almost single-handedly kept them up in the third tier.

With a staggering eighteen clean sheets (the most in League One) for a relegation threatened side, Ripley really showed his credentials and was named League One goalkeeper of the year.

With Boro not prepared to give him a chance to impress, perhaps Sunderland could offer him some regular playing time.
