No reminder is needed of Sunderland’s struggle last season in a campaign where they finished rock bottom, and as a result now find themselves preparing for a season in the Championship.
Simon Grayson, who masterminded Preston to two consecutive top half finishes on one of the division’s lowest budgets, has taken the reins at the Stadium of Light and has began the rebuilding job necessary.
He has recruited real quality already with players such as Aiden McGeady and Brendan Galloway signing deals in the North East.
But the squad at Grayson’s disposal is still considerably lacking and more signings are certainly needed.
One man that Sunderland should have a real crack at bringing to the club is Celtic man Liam Henderson.
The central-midfielder made his professional debut for the Scottish champions when he was just 17, showing the potential the young man has got.
Since then, he has had loan spells with Norwegian side Rosenborg and one a little closer to home with Hibernian.
During his time at Hibernian, he hugely impressed as his five goals and ten assists helped the side to a third place finish, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premiership.
Hibs did have some success that season though as Henderson was part of the squad who lifted the Scottish Cup, beating Rangers in the final in brilliant style.
Henderson returned to Celtic last year but featured just 10 times so time away from Celtic Park to gain further experience is just what is needed.
A loan deal for Sunderland isn’t the ideal way they want to be signing players but it is highly unlikely that Celtic would let the 21-year-old leave on a permanent basis.
