Sunderland are on the verge of winning the race to sign Dylan McGeouch on a free transfer, according to The Scottish Sun.

McGeouch is a free agent after his contract with Hibernian expired and he has plenty of options on the table.

But Sunderland look set to win the race for his signature, despite interest from Scottish Premiership sides and teams in the English Championship.

Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers were interested in the recently-capped Scotland international while Scottish top flight duo Aberdeen and Rangers were also in the hunt.

However, the Black Cats look set to snap up the midfielder, who also had an offer of a contract extension from Hibernian.

The 25-year-old impressed for Hibs last season in their first campaign back in the Scottish Premiership.

Now he looks set to follow PFA Scotland Manager of the Year Jack Ross south of the border to join Sunderland for their League One campaign.

Sunderland suffered consecutive demotions and will now play in the third tier, although McGeouch's arrival boosts their promotion hopes.

The Verdict

McGeouch is the perfect creative spark that Sunderland need in midfield for a League One campaign.

The former Celtic man has impressed in the Scottish Premiership and has previous experience of English football, during a loan spell with Coventry City a few years back.

This is an impressive, marquee capture who will surely lead Sunderland's promotion charge next term.
