Sunderland are set to be handed a major boost next month with Duncan Watmore's return from injury imminent.

According to The Northern Echo, Duncan Watmore is set to return after the international break, which will take place in the middle part of next month.

Watmore suffered a serious long term injury last December, which has kept him sidelined for the last eight months.

The England under-21 international ruptured his cruciate ligament in his knee and had an operation on it in April.

Duncan Watmore is still recovering but it is believed that progress is going well and he is expected to make a return to training soon.

Although he missed out on pre-season, the versatile forward spent significant periods of time with the physio and fitness coaches in the summer break, working on strengthening his knee.

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson has confirmed that he hopes to have Duncan Watmore back in his side for the first or second game after the September international break.

Predominantly a winger, the 23-year-old is able to play centrally or up front too.

The former Manchester United trainee has four goals in 43 senior games for Sunderland and previously won the Under 21 Premier League Player of the Year in 2014-15.

The Verdict

Duncan Watmore's return could be a huge boost for Grayson's options.

The 23-year-old provides versatility, pace, energy and a brilliant work ethic; all of these attributes are going to equip him well for a season in the Championship and aid his development.
