Sunderland are reportedly keen to bring in Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg on loan until the end of the season, according to the Daily Mirror via HITC.

Grigg has fallen down the pecking order since the Latics returned to the Championship under Paul Cook but has still managed to score four goals in 16 appearances this season.

The 27-year-old bagged 19 times for Wigan as they won promotion back to the second tier at the first time of asking last season.

He also scored 25 when they were promoted from the division previously in the 2015/16 season, a record that clearly is not lost on the likes of Black Cats' manager Jack Ross.

Sunderland currently sit in third place and on the cusp of the automatic promotion places just one point behind second-placed Luton Town and with a game in hand over the Hatters.

This weekend sees them square off against each other at the Stadium of Light in what is set to be one of the most important League One matches of the season.

The verdict

This signing could secure Sunderland promotion.

Grigg really is that good at this level and with the likes of Lynden Gooch, Chris Maguire and Duncan Watmore providing for him, goals are as good as guaranteed.

The only problem could be his wages so a Bryan Oviedo or an Aiden McGeady may well have to depart to make room for him.
