According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (27/01, 11:18), Chris Martin will have until the end of the weekend to decide if he wants to join Sunderland on-loan from Derby County.
Martin’s future has been one of the Sky Bet Championship’s long-running transfer sagas this month, with Derby looking to offload the striker following the addition of Cameron Jerome this month.
Sunderland had entered talks with Martin earlier this month, but following those reports, there have been no further developments, with the 29-year-old striker still a Derby players heading into the final days of the transfer window.
Martin is reportedly not keen on a move to the Stadium of Light, where he would be leaving Derby’s promotion push for a relegation battle, with Chris Coleman’s side struggling in the relegation zone and facing the possibility of dropping through the trap door.
Coleman now appears to have set a deadline for Martin to make up his mind on a move, with the Mirror reporting that a decision needs to be made before the end of the weekend.
So far this season Martin has featured on 23 occasions in the Championship, scoring one goal.
Time is running out for Sunderland this month, with Coleman needing to add bodies to his squad in the coming days.
The loss of James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban has left a gaping hole in Sunderland’s squad, which needs to be filled with a senior striker this week.
If Martin isn’t making the move, Sunderland need to start looking elsewhere.
