Sunderland have finally got their man, confirming that Wigan striker Will Grigg has joined the club via their official Twitter feed.

Wigan have confirmed the deal cost the Black Cats £4m, significantly more than the initial £250,000 bid they put in at the start of the window. The latest development brings a satisfactory end to what was a dogged and persistent pursuit of the Northern Ireland striker.

The 27-year old scored 65 goals in 150 appearances for the Latics and had a prolific season in League One where his 19 goals helped them to the title. He bagged 26 in all competitions last season, but has found his chances limited in the Championship.

Sunderland have been in pursuit of a replacement for Josh Maja, the 19-year-old contract rebel who joined Bordeaux earlier in the transfer window. After reportedly making failed five bids for Grigg, they've finally snared their man.

Jack Ross' side are currently fifth in the League One table, nine points shy of table topping Luton Town, but have games in hand over all of the clubs above them in the hunt for a promotion spot.

The Verdict

This could be a huge signing for the Black Cats. Grigg is an international striker who has already dominated defences in this division once, now he's getting the chance to do it all over again.

It does highlight the imparity between clubs in the league though. £4m would probably buy you Accrington Stanley, ground, players and the works. There's a huge imbalance and it underlines the size of achievement those smaller clubs make in simply being able to compete on any level with the big spenders.
