Sunderland are continuing their search for a new manager and they are believed to be weighing up an approach for Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom.
That's the latest according to the Sunderland Echo, who have stated that his name has been discussed by the key decision-makers at the club. This has seen the Yorkshireman come in as one of the favourites among the bookmakers, along with Aitor Karanka.
The Tykes boss has worked wonders with the club since he was appointed. Firstly, he led them to a Football League Trophy win and promotion through the play-offs as caretaker, before easily surviving last season.
As well as that, he's had to contend with severe budget restraints and seen most promising young players they the club have developed sold on for profit that he hasn't been able to completely re-invest.
This year, Barnsley are 16th in the table but are nine points ahead of the Wearside club. When the two sides met at Oakwell earlier in the season, Heckingbottom's men won with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.
Sunderland will expect to name an appointment before the return to action against Millwall on November 18.
The Verdict
Paul Heckingbottom would be a great choice as manager, if Sunderland could convince him to leave his current job.
Whilst they are obviously a bigger club, the situation surrounding the North East team is not appealing and the 40-year old may prefer to stay put.
However, it's pleasing for fans that he's a name they're considering, but they need to make an appointment soon, preferably before the Millwall clash.
