Sunderland have reportedly registered their interest in signing Bristol City winger Hakeeb Adelakun according to Football Insider.

The report also revealed that Rotherham United and Doncaster Rovers have also expressed an interest in landing Adelakun's signature for the remainder of this year's campaign.

It seems unlikely that Bristol City are going to be willing to sanction Adelakun's permanent departure, so a loan move is likely to be the best option for both parties involved.

The 23-year-old is yet to make an appearance for Lee Johnson's side this season, and given that he only made five league appearances in total last term, a temporary exit seems as though it'll be confirmed in the near future.

Sunderland could certainly benefit from having additional depth in their attacking options, with Phil Parkinson's side currently sat 13th in the League One table.

In his last season in the third tier, Adelakun scored four goals and was on hand to provide 12 assists in League One for Scunthorpe United, so it's clear to see that he can cut it at this level.

Bristol City could soon be making a move to sign Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah on loan during this month's transfer window, and this would only push Adelakun further down the pecking order in Lee Johnson's plans for the remainder of the season.

It remains to be seen as to which club the winger would prefer to move to, but you would imagine that Sunderland could certainly be a tempting offer.

Do you know where these former Sunderland players are playing their football nowadays?

The Verdict:

Surely there are better and more experienced options out there for Sunderland this month?

I still don't think they've handled the Aidan McGeady situation very well at all, and think they're making a mistake in moving him on before the transfer window closes.

Adelakun's potential arrival would be a risk as he doesn't have much experience of playing in senior football, and for a club with the stature of Sunderland, he would have to hit the ground immediately.

Otherwise, he could soon feel the pressure from a Stadium of Light faithful who are expectant of promotion back into the Championship this season.
