Sunderland register interest in signing Championship midfielder

Sunderland are said to be locked in a transfer tussle with Championship clubs for Cardiff City midfielder Will Vaulks according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims that the Black Cats are rivalling the likes of Bristol City and Stoke City to any potential deal for the former Rotherham United man.

Vaulks has struggled for consistent game time this season with Neil Harris’ side, and has made 12 appearances in total across this year’s campaign.

He only signed for the Bluebirds in the summer of 2019, but it seems as though his days with Cardiff are numbered as we approach the second-half of this season.

A move to Sunderland could be a tempting proposition for Vaulks, with the Black Cats showing real improvement in recent weeks to fire themselves back into contention to win promotion this term.

The pressure had been on Phil Parkinson in the early stages of his spell at the Stadium of Light, but he’s silenced his doubters with an upturn in results.

It remains to be seen as to whether Sunderland and the other teams interested in signing Vaulks are weighing up a permanent or a loan move for the midfielder, but he’d add much-needed depth to all of the teams interested in landing his signature.

Sunderland are next in action on Friday evening when they take on Doncaster Rovers, where Phil Parkinson’s men will be aiming to make it eight games unbeaten.

Who is this ex-Sunderland midfielder?

The Verdict:

I think this would be a smart bit of business by the Black Cats if they pull this off.

Vaulks hasn’t had much of a chance to impress with Cardiff City this season, and he’s a player that has shown he can perform to a high standard in the second tier earlier in his career with Rotherham United.

So, it would be somewhat of a coup if Sunderland were to beat Bristol City to any potential deal for the midfielder, and it would be a real statement of intent by Phil Parkinson’s side if they beat Championship teams to his signature.
