Sunderland midfielder Jonny Williams has returned for the U23 side following surgery on his shoulder in November.

The Crystal Palace loanee had been ruled out for a period of up to three months, and now appears to be ready for selection after coming through the reserves’ 1-0 win over West Ham United unscathed.

The Welshman joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan deal back in the summer, but picked up a shoulder injury during the clash with Millwall before the turn of the year.

The 24-year-old will now hope to fight his way back into the first-team at The Stadium of Light, and should have an excellent opportunity to do so under Chris Coleman, who managed the player during his time as the boss of the Welsh national side.

The Verdict

Sunderland are in big trouble towards the foot of the table, and the return of Williams to action will come as a welcome boost to all associated with the club.

The midfielder is a quality player in the middle of the park when fit, and will certainly make a difference upon his return to the first-team squad in the coming weeks.

Coleman will be keen to integrate the player back into his squad, and with Williams available for selection, the club’s chances of survival will have certainly increased.
