Sunderland are hoping to sign Greg Docherty on loan from Rangers, according to reports from Scotland.

According to The Scottish Sun, Docherty is a top target for Sunderland with Jack Ross keen on taking the midfielder on a season-long loan.

Ross was appointed Sunderland manager this summer and is intent on looking to Scotland for his transfer business.

The 2017/18 PFA Scotland Manager of the Year looks set to miss out on John McGinn of Hibernian but still wants to bolster his midfield options so will swoop for Docherty.

The 21-year-old joined Rangers from Hamilton Academical in January but Steven Gerrard wants to send him out on loan to gain some first-team experience.

Sunderland face competition from other League One sides for the Scotland under-21 international but they are in pole position to finalise this deal.

The Black Cats are hoping to get this deal over the line quickly so that Ross can focus on bringing in other targets ahead of their campaign in the third tier.

The Verdict

With over 100 appearances under his belt for Hamilton - and then a further 14 at Rangers - Docherty has the ideal mixture of youth and experience.

Moving from the Scottish Premiership to League One could be a good career move for the youngster as he aims for a future first-team role at Ibrox.

At Sunderland, he could take his game to the next level.
