Sunderland have confirmed that exciting young full-back Denver Hume has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2021.

The 20-year-old, who has come through the ranks at the Stadium of Light, has featured ten times for Jack Ross' side this season as they look to secure promotion back to the Championship.

His most recent appearances came as the Black Cats recorded back-to-back wins at Accrington and Rochdale earlier this month.

However, he is seen as someone who has a real bright future in the game, and Ross told Sunderland's official site that he has high hopes for the player.

"Denver’s progression over the course of the campaign has impressed all of us, so I’m delighted that he has committed his future to the club.

"From day one of pre-season he has worked hard and bought into what we are trying to do. I believe he can play an important role for this football club moving forward."

The youngster has had to settle for a place on the bench over the past few weeks and is likely to be watching on as they take on Portsmouth in a massive game on Saturday.

The Verdict

This is very good news for Sunderland as Hume is clearly very talented and could have a bright future in the game.

Having come through the academy, the full-back will be delighted to be rewarded with a new deal and he will now look to kick-on.

The immediate focus has to be on winning promotion and Hume will look to establish himself as a regular next season.
