League One newcomers Sunderland are preparing to move for impressive Peterborough United midfielder Marcus Maddison, according to a report by Sports Mole, via the Daily Mail.

The Posh midfielder, who once again hit double figures in goals and assists last term, has been hugely impressive over the last few seasons and has become one of the most sought after players outside of the top two divisions in English football.

He has been told he can leave the club this summer, sparking something of a transfer scramble, but it would appear it is Sunderland who lead the race for Maddison, with the club preparing a hefty bid to land their man ahead of their rivals.

Maddison is a proven commodity in League One and many expected him to make the move to the Championship this summer as he seeks to prove himself at a higher level, however, he might well be tempted by a move to the Stadium of Light, with the club under new ownership and looking to make an immediate return to the second tier.

The Black Cats had a miserable campaign last time out and were relegated as both Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman failed to stop the rot in the North East.

Sunderland fans, what do you think to Maddison? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!
