Sunderland full back Reece James has admitted that he hasn't opened contract talks with the Black Cats, but has preferred to focus on their challenge for an automatic promotion spot.

The 25-year-old was a summer capture from Wigan Athletic, but only signed a one-year deal.

That hasn't been extended through the season and as things stand, James will be free to leave the club upon conclusion of his current deal.

He told the Sunderland Echo that wasn't his focus when asked whether talks had taken place.

“At the moment, not really (have there been any talks). The main thing is we get through to the end of the season and concentrate on that, and that’s where my focus is at the moment."

“Anything after that will be a bonus so we need to make sure we go up.”

James began his career in the Manchester United academy, but failed to make the grade at Old Trafford. He spent time on loan with Carlisle, Huddersfield and Rotherham before his move to Wigan.

This season he's racked up 34 appearances for Sunderland, 23 of those coming as starts in League One. His recent outings have been limited following an injury, with his last appearance in red and white coming in the EFL Trophy defeat against Portsmouth.

The Verdict

James is a capable and competent full back, but you wonder if promotion might be a step too far. Is he ready to step up to the Championship?

It could be that the run in is a nice distraction from the worrying scenario that if Sunderland go up, they may feel they don't need James in their squad.
