Sunderland defender Papy Djilobodji is reported to be the subject of interest from two Bundesliga clubs as his exit draws near, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The 29-year old failed to report for pre-season training and the Black Cats are hoping to move him on before the end of the month, as clubs across Europe still able to sign players permanently, as well as on loan.

His failure to return to the club has resulted in his wages being stopped, but Sunderland still want to bring an end to the saga.

A summer move to Trabzonspor didn't materialise, with the Turkish side eventually confirming they weren't interested in securing his services.

However, the Sunderland Echo now claim that reports in Germany believe there to be interest from Hannover 96 and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Djilobodji joined Sunderland in 2016 for a fee reported to be around £8m, but made just 18 Premier League appearances and just 22 in total. He joined French side Dijon on loan last season, playing 29 times as they finished 11th in Ligue 1.

The Verdict

He might not be costing them any money right now, but there's capital tied up in Djilobodji and Sunderland will want to release that as quickly as possible.

His move is reflective of the awful times the club has endured recently, his 22 games cost more than the entirety of Sunderland's summer business and some players have contributed more in 180 minutes than he ever has.

Nobody will shed a tear when he goes, that is for sure.
